Before the year comes to a close (officially), now is the perfect time to look back on the year that will go down in the history books. It was a trying year, to say the least, but it also gave rise to many opportunities and a shift in priorities for most people (and businesses). Wherever you may be by the end of 2020, the start of a new year brings forth a new hope in the horizon. That’s why we would like you to join us as we look back on the top 20 of 2020 list with enthusiasm and vigor because it shows our resilience for a year that tested all of us.
Best of Hair Styling in 2020
The year 2020 was the year of do-it-yourself beauty and hair styling. It gave rise to the popularity of at-home products and the same goes with the hair styling industry. As salons were among those businesses that were shut down during the height of quarantine measures in Australia and in other parts of the world, many were forced to become their own hairstylists at home.
As such, we at My Hair Care & Beauty were more than thrilled to bring our clients a wide selection of hair styling tools and products that they can choose from, and to make hair styling at home easier so you can look your best for those Zoom meetings and home celebrations or intimate gatherings.
The classic go-to brands such as ghd continues to deliver when it comes to offering innovative tools that made being your own hairstylist a breeze. Case in point: the ghd Helios White Hair Dryer.
This is hands-down one of our top-selling products for 2020 and it’s easy to see why. It is engineered to deliver a powerful styling experience at home so you can get professional results, even when you do the styling yourself. And speaking of salon-worthy hair at home, the ghd platinum+ black styler was another one of our best-sellers this year. Known as the world’s first smart styler, it gives you precise styling results every single time.
The trend of at-home hair styling has also inspired creativity among our clients. While ghd continues to be the go-to brand for those who like professional-quality results, this past year also saw the rise of more innovative styling tools. One such example is the Mermade Hair Waver.
The brand describes this hair styling tool as the “world’s most simple way to get big beautiful waves.” It is the secret to recreating on-trend hairstyles, especially those big, bouncy waves popularized by celebrities like Kim Kardashian. Made with extra large barrels, it helps you create bouncy curls that make waves.
While the Mermade Hair Waver made headlines for its big and bold style, the Gamma IQ Perfetto Hair Dryer is located on the extreme end of the spectrum: it is known as the world’s smallest and lightest hair dryer. Weighing in at only 294 grams, it marks a new era in hair styling that is ultra-compact, ultra-lightweight, and delivers a quiet performance.
Since this is a lightweight and easy to handle hair dryer, it was a perfect choice for our clients this past year since it made it easier for them to practice styling at home. Since it was introduced into the market, it has now become a cult styling tool!
A few other coveted hair styling tools that our clients loved in 2020 were the Muk Curl Stick V2.0 and the GlamPalm Clinic Hair Straightener.
Best of Hair Care in 2020
In keeping with the trend of mastering the art of styling your own hair at home, it’s not just hair styling tools that gained popularity in 2020. At-home hair care has also seen a major surge. The Covid-19 crisis highlighted an interest in at-home hair care products so that those who were forced to stay home can maintain the health of their hair even when they were not allowed to see their stylists.
One of the best (and most sought after!) products that we have for at-home hair is the Olaplex Take Home Bond Smoother Kit. This limited edition kit contains three of Olaplex’s best products: Olaplex Bond Maintenance Shampoo and Conditioner, and the No. 6 Bond Smoother. All of these products work together to transform brittle hair and inject shine and manageability to the strands.
Another top-selling product from Olaplex in 2020 is the No.7 Bonding Oil. This is a highly-concentrated, weightless oil that repairs compromised hair to boost colour vibrancy, promote softness, and increase shine.
The Alfaparf Semi di Lino Moisture Nutritive Mask is another one of the most sought after products in 2020. Hair care masks at home were among the most coveted product categories in 2020, which is consistent with the demand for at-home hair care. This mask has intense re-hydrating properties that injects moisture back into deeply dehydrated hair to promote vitality and lustre.
Aside from the aforementioned products, at-home hair colour treatments were a prevailing trend in 2020. Again, the lack of access to hair salons meant that more people had to touch up their hair colour at home. It’s no wonder why purple hair care shampoos were flying off the shelves! The evo fabuloso platinum blonde colour boosting treatment is, therefore, one of our best-sellers for 2020. It is one of the best products we have to achieve a clean blonde tone and remove the unwanted yellow tones off your hair.
Best of Skincare and Beauty in 2020
2020 was a tough year – that’s no question. The self-care surge in the beauty industry is self-explanatory. In the midst of health woes and the brunt of the pandemic to the economy, self-care shoot upon everyone’s priority lists.
This highlighted the demand for luxury skin care products that were not only beneficial in terms of improving skin care, but more because of the pleasureable experience that they offered the users. By mid-2020, people are now heavily invested on their wellbeing and pampering one’s self with luxury skin care products meant that you’re one step closer to your bid to erase negatitivty off your daily routine.
Zove Beauty is one of our most sought after brands this 2020. The brand embodied the luxury skin care that many craved this year. The use of beauty tools such as gua sha and facial roller has been hyped tremendously and the brand’s offering of these must-have beauty items provided women the tools they need to feel pampered and have beautiful, glowing skin at home for a spa-like experience.
Face masks were also making headlines this year. It is yet another one of those beauty and personal care products that became increasingly valued during the year of the pandemic. This part of anyone’s daily skincare routine felt like an ‘escape’ and it was a pampering experience, too. That you can expect especially with one of our best-selling products like the Aceology Rose Petal Modeling Mask.
With the fallout of makeup products, consumers have turned to skincare and personal care products instead. It, therefore, saw the rise of cosmeceutical products like the Cosmedix Firming Face Mask. The blend of science and advanced ingredients made it possible for users to achieve effective and long-lasting results for their skin that goes beyond makeup and cosmetics. Somehow, seeing the improvements on one’s skin was also good for the mental health.
Other top-selling skincare products that were rooted on the use of natural ingredients or advanced science included The Jojoba Company Certified Organic Jojoba Oil, Pixi Glow Tonic, and asap Super B Complex.
Still in keeping with the DIY trend for 2020, self-tanning also saw a boom. With spa and tanning salon closures, women had to rely on self-tan products like the Loving Tan Bronze Shimmer Luminous Cream to not only achieve that gorgeous bronzed skin, but also as part of one’s self-care activity. Bathing, along with self-tanning, is another one of the most popular choices of activities for self-care in 2020.
With the trend of ditching the glam, simplified approaches to beauty and makeup became the preferred choice for many women in 2020. Coloured cosmetics and the fragrance industry were among the hardest hit – no surprise given than most people were forced to stay at home. The makeup-free trend was also rising along with the no-makeup look. It, therefore, gave rise to the popularity of makeup products that offered the perfect base, like the Inika Certified Organic BB Cream.
Best in Home & Wellness in 2020
Natural and healthy skin was a priority for 2020 for most people, men and women alike. But with the home being the refuge for many for months, it shifted the focus towards protecting your immediate environment and making the home a haven for relaxation and self-care.
As such, we launched the Home collection at My Hair Care & Beauty to respond to the growing demand for products that made your time at home worthwhile and relaxing. Products like the Celia Loves scented candles rose in popularity given the need to invest in products that promoted serenity. Consumers also longed for scents that were nostalgic and comforting in order to evoke happy feelings and thoughts. The Japanese Honeysuckle was one of our best-sellers from the brand.
Scented candles were not the only health and wellness products for the home that boomed in 2020. With the stress and challenges to the mental health brought on by the pandemic, sleep aides were also crucial part to protecting one’s health.
The Ceramic Essential Oil Diffuser from The Goodnight Co became an integral part of every home. It enables consumers to practice aromatherapy at home and use essential oils designed to assist with sleep and relaxation, as well as improve your overall mood.
The use of silk pillowcase also helped with getting quality sleep at night. With health becoming everyone’s top priority, and sleep being crucial to overall health, it was a no-brainer why this was one of the top selling products in 2020.
Final Note
Self-care priorities were the defining theme for 2020 in terms of shopping for beauty, hair, and personal care products. It is very likely that this new shift in priorities will remain the same, even after the pandemic is over. It seems like a step in the right direction as personal care should be given utmost importance, especially as we transition to the ‘new normal’. This was already were the beauty industry was headed, but the pandemic merely accelerated it.
